The big game is around the corner and all over the U.S. people are coming up with new recipes and dishes to share on that day. See football isn't just about the game, especially for those of us who don't really get it. For many of us, sporting events are all about the food. Football game snacking, now that's my game! This week I did a sample run of something I have been wanting to try to make for a long time now, something I tried once and totally failed at, caramel apples with candy (SNICKERS®) toppings.

Along with many other game day snacks, I want to have something for the kids to really look forward to eating. There's going to be so much spicy and grownup food that the kids deserve to have a special treat to enjoy. I think a caramel apple that they can top themselves is going to be a fun and delicious way to give the kids something special to do and to eat. Children love to create and getting to top their very own caramel apple is going to be something that really appeals to them.

Candy Apples (8-10 apples)

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cups melted butter
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 8 washed apples w/ stick inserted in stem
  • 1 cup Snickers® bite size pieces
In a medium saucepan over high heat cook the corn syrup, butter, sugar and condensed milk to 246 degrees. Important: you will need to stir steadily the entire time that the caramel is on stovetop. Once you have reached 246 degrees, remove caramel from heat and immediately dip and roll your washed apples into the sauce. If you will be topping them yourself just quickly roll apples into the bowl and set aside to cool. For game day I will be setting the caramel apples on small individual plates surrounded by bowls of chopped SNICKERS® and Skittles®.

Making your own candy apples at home isn't as scary as it sounds, though I do think it's a good idea to do a trial run just like I did. My first experience making caramel a few years ago was so disastrous that it's taken me a long time to step up to the plate again, but this time I had much better results.

I am really excited for game day to arrive, there's going to be so much food and so much good company. These are the moments that really make life special and this year they will be even sweeter once we bring out the SNICKERS® and Skittles® plus a big plate of caramel apples just waiting to be topped.

I purchased all of the ingredients for my candy apples at Walmart. There are always plenty of SNICKERS® and Skittles® sizes and packages to pick from, at the lowest prices. I can't wait to see the happy faces of the children once they spot the apples and candy. It's going to be a great game day!
